SwitchCue is a beta. If something behaves oddly, it is worth reporting — most of what has been fixed so far came from someone describing exactly what they saw.
Before you report
These cover nearly everything that gets reported. Each one names the screen you are looking at.
- The panel will not open
- Click the SwitchCue icon in the toolbar. If it is not there, open Chrome's extensions menu (the puzzle piece) and pin SwitchCue. The panel opens in whichever window you click from.
- The keyboard shortcut does nothing
- Chrome silently declines a suggested shortcut that another extension already uses, which leaves it listed but unassigned. Open Settings inside the panel and look under Keyboard — it shows the key that is actually assigned, or offers to set one.
- It says SwitchCue lost its connection
- The extension was updated or reloaded while the panel was open, so the panel is looking at something that is no longer there. Press Reload panel. Nothing has been lost — your Workspaces are stored by the extension, not by the panel. If it happens repeatedly, close the panel and open it again from the toolbar.
- It says SwitchCue is in another window
- SwitchCue works in one Chrome window at a time. Go to that window takes you back to it. Use this window instead moves SwitchCue here: the Workspace that was open is saved first and stops running, so you can reopen it whenever you like, and none of its tabs are closed.
- Some tabs did not come back
- SwitchCue tells you which ones and why, on the screen that appears after reopening. Chrome does not let an extension reopen certain pages — its own settings pages, the New Tab page, and local files — so those cannot be saved in a Workspace, and SwitchCue says so at the time rather than losing them quietly.
- I have two copies of every tab after restarting Chrome
- That happens when Chrome restores the tabs itself and SwitchCue then opens them again. Before reopening a Workspace it asks about pages that already appear to be open, under Pages you already have open — ticking one there means it is used as it is instead of being opened a second time.
- A tab I opened joined a Workspace on its own
- That is the Adding tabs setting, in Settings under Switching. It has three positions: add nothing automatically, add tabs opened from pages in the Workspace, or add every tab you open while a Workspace is running. Change it there; it takes effect immediately.
- A tab I closed keeps coming back
- Closing a tab by hand removes it from the Workspace straight away only if Closing a tab removes it from the Workspace is ticked in Settings. With it unticked, the tab stays in the Workspace until you next switch or pause, so it reopens until then. Either way you can open Manage tabs and remove it, which never closes anything.
- Import was refused
- Import works only into a profile that has no Workspaces in it yet. This is deliberate for the beta: merging an export into existing Workspaces is not supported, and refusing is safer than guessing which copy of a Workspace you meant.
- I uninstalled and my Workspaces are gone
- Uninstalling removes everything the extension stored, immediately and permanently. The Export file in Settings is the only copy that survives it. If you still have one, install SwitchCue again and import it into the empty profile.
Reporting a bug
Email support@switchcue.app. Reports are read by the developer who builds SwitchCue.
What helps most, roughly in order:
- What you did, step by step, and what you expected instead.
- Whether it happens again if you repeat those steps. "Once, and never since" is still worth sending — say so, and it will be treated as such.
- Your Chrome version and operating system. Chrome's version is at
chrome://settings/help. - The SwitchCue version, from Settings → Diagnostics → Build inside the panel.
- A screenshot of the panel, if something on it looked wrong. Crop out anything private.
- Anything shown at
chrome://extensionson the SwitchCue card — an error there is usually the whole answer.
Sending diagnostics, if you want to
Settings → Diagnostics has Export beta diagnostics. That file holds only counts and size bands of what the extension did — how many switches completed, how long they took, whether anything failed. It contains no Workspace name, no page title, no address and no Next Action text, and it is checked a second time as it is written to make sure of that.
It is optional and it is never sent on its own; attaching it to an email is the only way it reaches us. What is in it, in full.
Known limits in this beta
- One Chrome window at a time. Opening the panel in another window offers to move SwitchCue there, and says what happens first.
- Some pages cannot be saved. Chrome will not let an extension reopen its own settings pages, the New Tab page or local files, so they cannot be part of a Workspace.
- Import needs an empty profile, with no Workspaces in it yet.
- One computer. There is no sign-in and nothing is copied between your devices.
- Uninstalling deletes everything. Export first.
Privacy
What SwitchCue stores, where, and what leaves your computer is set out on the privacy policy. The short version: your Workspace data stays on this computer, and SwitchCue does not transmit it to SwitchCue-operated servers.
